Native New Zealand Wildlife Art Panels

We have been busy right up until the end of Term 4 finishing off some AMAZING art panels based on native New Zealand wildlife. During our Term 2 inquiry, Year 5 classes investigated what native wildlife we had in our beautiful country, surveyed the school to see what were the most popular, looked at possible ways of making some art for our forest area and found out how much it would all cost. This term for our Year 5 art focus we have been busy researching, designing and painting. We were inspired by images of geometric animals and here is the end result from Room 6...

Tennis

This morning the Year 5 students had a sample of tennis skills. A team of coaches arrived and split the classes into five groups to teach them skills on a rotation. Groups practised serves, rallies, hand/eye coordination,  footwork skills and accuracy.  Students say that it was tiring but fun.

Here are some snapshots of the session...

As part of our "May the Force Be With You" inquiry this term we went to the Mind Lab to explore forces.  The three Year 5 classes were split into four groups and took part in four different scientific investigations. Emphasis was placed on making discoveries through trial and error, so mistakes were not only expected, but encouraged.

There were four rotations of different activities including:
  • Mixing unknown ingredients to create an explosive reaction with enough thrust to fire a film canister into the air
  • Creating a structure from card to withstand having a tennis ball dropped onto it
  • Constructing a vehicle propelled by a cardboard fan attached to a small motor
  • Programming a remote controlled vehicle to make a series of movements

A Feast of Visual Language

Earlier this term we were looking at a variety of poems including couplets, quatrains, haiku, cinquain, acrostic and diamante poems. Along with these we wrote a poem entitled 'How to Eat a Poem'. We brainstormed words that related to eating (gobble, chomp, slurp), as well as features we might find in poetic writing (similes, conjunctions, alliteration) then created our own poems. To present our writing we thought about a food or drink item and constructed a collage to compliment our writing. Here are a few examples (come and check out the rest in Room 6)
